What Causes Hair Breakage & Split Ends ?

Posted on Jun 21st, 2018

Having a lack of moisture in your hair in the midst of a dry and cold winter season is essentially inevitable. Let’s discuss how to prevent hair breakage and spot some common reasons why hair breakage occurs.

1. Brushing

Did you know what you choose to brush your hair with and the way you brush is one of the most common ways to cause breakage to your hair? Remember to be gentle with your hair when untangling the knots.

• Do not rip your hair off with a fine-toothed comb.
• Use a wide-toothed comb to brush your hair, starting from your ends, moving up as your hair detangles.
• Towel dry your hair as much as you can after you have just stepped out of the shower, before setting out to smooth it.
• Use a detangling serum or a lightweight oil in your hair while it is damp to help with combing, and prevent further split ends and breakage.

2. Ponytails

We all love ponytails and sometimes they are our only way to get the hair out of the way. Throwing hair in a ponytail or the infamous top bun is a cute and simple solution for everyday styling. However, tying your hair repetitively in the ponytail can cause damage. The strength of the hair will wear down due to the repeated pressure on the areas where that top bun sits, resulting in broken hair and split ends. The yanking and pulling when you remove the ponytail is damaging to the hair itself. You will be surprised at how it affects your hair integrity if you be gentle with this process.

3. Headbands

Headbands and slicked back clean buns might be timeless and classic, but you do not realize the damage you are doing to your hairline. Wearing headbands even the soft elastic cloth ones causes stress on your hairline. The hair around the forehead is a lot more fragile than any other areas where your hair grows. The stress and strain by headbands can break those hairs, resulting in a more broadened forehead.
